Challenge / ask

Deforestation inflicts irreversible harm to the planet. Access to actionable information is crucial in combating it, but it often remains inaccessible to the public and activists alike. Less than 1% of deforestation incidents are covered by the media!   Recognizing the critical need for data access, Alwaleed Philanthropies launched ATLAI to bridge this knowledge gap and empower communities with the information necessary to effectively advocate for their forests based on 10,000 sampled incidents.

Solution provided

ATLAI uses trained generative AI to process tens of thousands of deforestation incidents. It then generates campaign-ready reports, social media posts, and news articles detailing each event, integrating it with historical data to provide comprehensive context.   These reports are delivered to the inboxes of journalists, activists, and campaigners, simplifying their work and empowering them to raise awareness and exercise pressure on local authorities to make impactful changes.

Execution

The generated reports are acquired through access to Global Forest Watch, an online platform that utilizes satellite imagery to detect deforestation events globally, and through the operation of a trained Large Language Model (LLM) AI.

Subscribers would automatically receive alerts, content, and news reports, in addition to relevant historical data. They may also consult the website and generate specific reports to back campaigns in multiple languages.
